WELCOME BACK EVERYONE TO THIS WARM AND WELCOMING CIRCLE OF WEEKLY HEAD VOICES! Figure 1: View from a family walk in Hermanus. I was surprised by the beauty here, memories of years ago apparently faded. You are reading the 214th edition of the WHV, the first of 2021 (hurrah), and spottily covering the intersections of my consciousness with the period of time from Monday, January 11 to Sunday, January 24 of the year 2021.

An introduction to Asynchronous Communication for the workplace

Thanks to COVID-19, many organizations and their their workers have had to fast-track their previously hypothetical plans and dreams to adopt remote working. Where this was once a long-running debate with a handful of more progressive companies actually executing, all of a sudden many of us found ourselves working from home, including spending significant parts of our day in video meetings. Less commuting, less polluting and much more flexibility in how one achieves work-life balance are amazing benefits.

Super simple yearly post archives for Hugo

I was looking for the most simple way to get automatic yearly archives of all blog posts for the Hugo setup responsible for cpbotha.net (this blog). Fortunately I ran into Rohan Verma’s template-based solution which I could then simplify into the even more straight-forward shortcode-based solution presented in this post. For an example of the output, see the post archives here. To make this happen on your Hugo setup is a two step process.

The 2020 to 2021 transition post

Welcome to the year 2021 friends. Every year around about this time, I try to write a transition post like this one. You can get a list of all of the transition posts by going to the “transition” tag page. If you don’t have time to read them all (haha), you could just scan through last year’s 2019 to 2020 edition. Well hello there folks, and welcome to the 212th edition of the Weekly Head Voices! This one covers the two weeks from Monday December 7 to Sunday December 20, 2020. My end-of-year vacation started at some point during the period under investigation, so there’s not all that much to report here, except perhaps for a small philosophy message brought to you by the world of science. Figure 1: View of the bridge over the mouth of the Steenbras River, taken from our anniversary hike up Steenbras Gorge to the Crystal Pools and back.

Notes on the book "Creativity, Inc." by Ed Catmull with Amy Wallace

You are reading the consolidated and refined version of the notes and excerpts I made while reading the book Creativity Inc.. This is by no means a complete summary of the book, but rather a collection of lessons that I found note-worthy. Overview The book deals with the building and maintenance of sustainable creative organizations, painted on the rich background of Ed Catmull’s role in the construction and running of Pixar and later also of Disney Animation.
